Eco School and bees!
Broadwater Eco School
Broadwater School is a beacon of sustainability, proudly championing environmental responsibility with our dynamic Eco Council at the helm. On 21st June 2025, the Eco-Committee at Broadwater School achieved an Eco-Schools Green Flag Award with Distinction!
Eco Schools commented: "Your greatest success was establishing the Bee Club which has allowed pupils to nurture a thriving hive while gaining valuable knowledge about Eco-systems and the importance of pollination. This will have a lasting positive impact by encouraging environmental awareness amongst pupils and supporting biodiversity in your school’s community. Well done!
We also loved...
• We loved how the pupils actively participated in maintaining the bee hive and visiting the Farncombe Community Garden. This hands-on approach not only deepens their understanding of biodiversity but also creates a sense of responsibility towards local ecosystems.
• We were inspired by the school’s innovative efforts to raise money for the WWF endangered snow leopard initiative. This reflects a commitment to global Eco-awareness, teaching pupils the importance of protecting endangered species worldwide.
• It was fantastic how the Eco-club engaged in daily litter-picking activities, setting an excellent example of maintaining a cleaner and healthier environment. This consistent action cultivates pride in their surroundings and highlights the power of small, collective efforts in tackling Eco-litter issues.
• We enjoyed finding out about the creative activities organised for National Bee Day, including the Bee quiz and renaming the Bistro to "BEESTRO." These imaginative ideas provided pupils with memorable learning experiences while raising awareness about the vital role of bees in our ecosystem.
• Lastly, we were delighted to hear about the mayor’s involvement in the tree-planting initiative, showing how the school collaborates with the wider community. Your school’s efforts are truly inspiring and impactful. Well done!"
Empowering student voices is central to the council's ethos, with students democratically selecting a key action each year.
This year, the entire school participated in a vote to choose an endangered animal to adopt and support through fundraising for WWF. The resounding choice? The magnificent snow leopard! You can learn more about our chosen creature here: https://support.wwf.org.uk/adopt-a-snow-leopard
Beyond this exciting initiative, a constant hum of sustainability and recycling projects resonates throughout Broadwater. Furthermore, demonstrating a tangible commitment to our planet, every student participated in planting a tree. In November 2024, an impressive 750 hedgerow trees took root, and our dedicated Eco Council members diligently nurture these young saplings throughout the summer months.
