Overview

At Broadwater School, we believe Physical Education is about far more than learning a range of sports. Our curriculum is designed to nurture a lifelong commitment to health and physical activity by developing every student's Physical Literacy, the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to take responsibility for their engagement in physical activity at their chosen level.

Rather than viewing activities as isolated units of work, our curriculum is built around four interconnected strands that develop progressively from Year 7 through to Key Stage 4.

🟢 Move

Students develop the physical competence to move with confidence, efficiency and control across a wide range of physical activities. We begin by establishing strong movement foundations before applying and refining these skills in increasingly complex and varied contexts.

🟣 Think

Students develop the knowledge and understanding needed to make informed decisions about movement, performance and healthy lifestyles. They learn to analyse, solve problems, reflect on their learning and understand how physical activity contributes to lifelong health and wellbeing.

🔵 Feel

Students develop confidence, motivation and resilience through carefully planned experiences of challenge and success. They learn strategies to regulate emotions, respond positively to setbacks and recognise the important role physical activity plays in supporting mental wellbeing.

🔴 Connect

Students learn to communicate effectively, collaborate with others and develop leadership skills. Through teamwork, feedback and shared experiences they build positive relationships and understand the value of belonging within a sporting and physical activity community.

Throughout Key Stage 3 these four strands are revisited and developed, ensuring that learning builds progressively each year. By Key Stage 4, students are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to choose pathways that suit their interests, whether that is participation for health and enjoyment, competitive sport performance or further study through GCSE Physical Education or Sports science.

Alongside our curriculum, students benefit from an extensive programme of extra-curricular clubs, competitions, leadership opportunities and educational visits. We have strong links with local sports clubs and community organisations, providing opportunities for students to continue their participation beyond school and develop a lifelong relationship with physical activity.

Broadwater Leadership Academy

Developing Confident Leaders for Sport, School and Life

The Broadwater Leadership Academy is an exciting enrichment programme designed to develop the next generation of confident, resilient and compassionate leaders.

Going beyond traditional sports leadership, the academy combines practical leadership experiences with psychology, communication, teamwork and personal development to equip students with the skills they need to succeed both in school and beyond.

Throughout the programme, students learn how to organise events, lead teams, coach and mentor others, communicate effectively and understand what motivates people. They also develop valuable employability skills including problem solving, decision making, resilience, emotional intelligence and professionalism.

Our Four Leadership Pillars

🟢 Lead
Organise, plan, take responsibility and inspire others through positive leadership.

🟣 Think
Make informed decisions, solve problems, reflect on experiences and continually improve.

🔵 Feel
Develop confidence, resilience, emotional intelligence and the self-awareness to lead with empathy.

🔴 Connect
Communicate effectively, build positive relationships, collaborate with others and create an inclusive environment.

Leadership in Action

Students apply their learning through a wide range of authentic leadership opportunities, including:

  • Supporting Physical Education lessons
  • Leading primary school festivals and sporting events
  • Officiating competitions and tournaments
  • Mentoring younger students
  • Organising school and community events
  • Promoting participation in physical activity across the school

These experiences enable students to put leadership theory into practice while developing confidence, responsibility and professionalism.

The academy is closely aligned with Broadwater's Physical Literacy curriculum and our core values of Work Hard, Make a Difference and Be Kind. By encouraging students to first develop self-leadership before leading others, we aim to nurture young people who are confident, responsible and committed to making a positive contribution to both our school and the wider community.

Whether students aspire to become sports coaches, teachers, healthcare professionals, business leaders or simply wish to develop greater confidence and leadership skills, the Broadwater Leadership Academy provides an outstanding foundation for future success.

Enrichment

We believe that learning extends beyond the curriculum.

Students have access to a wide range of enrichment opportunities throughout the year, including:

  • Competitive fixtures, district and national competitions
  • House competitions and Sports Day
  • Broad-Rox fitness events
  • Leadership programmes
  • Sports tours
  • Ski trips
  • Outdoor and adventurous activities
  • Visits to elite sporting events
  • Community club links and pathways
  • Performance pathways

These experiences help students build confidence, develop friendships and foster a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity.

Student Voice

Student voice plays a vital role in shaping Physical Education at Broadwater. We believe that understanding students' experiences, motivations and perceptions of physical activity enables us to continually improve our curriculum and ensure every student feels valued within PE.

Alongside our Sports Council, which brings together representatives from across the school to discuss curriculum experiences, extra-curricular opportunities and future developments, we also use the MiMove platform to capture every student's voice throughout the year.

MiMove allows students to regularly reflect on their experiences in PE and physical activity, sharing their thoughts on areas such as confidence, motivation, enjoyment, wellbeing and personal progress. These reflections provide valuable insight into how students are experiencing the curriculum and help staff celebrate successes, identify barriers to participation and adapt teaching to better meet the needs of all learners.

By combining student feedback with participation data, MiMove helps us ensure that every student's voice is heard and valued. This allows us to make informed decisions that support our aim of developing physically literate young people who are confident, motivated and equipped to engage in physical activity for life.

Together, the Sports Council and MiMove ensure that students play an active role in shaping the future of Physical Education at Broadwater, helping us create a curriculum that is responsive, inclusive and centred around the needs of every learner.

Assessment

Assessment in Physical Education reflects the development of students' physical literacy rather than performance in a single activity.

Students are assessed across the four curriculum strands:

  • 🟢 Move – Physical competence and movement development
  • 🟣 Think – Knowledge, understanding and decision making
  • 🔵 Feel – Confidence, motivation and resilience
  • 🔴 Connect – Communication, teamwork and leadership

Teachers use ongoing formative and summative assessment to monitor progress and provide meaningful feedback that supports continual improvement. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning, recognise their strengths and identify next steps as they develop towards becoming physically literate individuals.

British Values

In PE lessons at Broadwater School we promote ‘fair play in competition’ throughout all lessons and through participation in national, regional,  local and inter-house sports competitions. Students are taught to follow rules and the expectations of the school while celebrating and rewarding success.   We have a competitive house cup competition that encourages all students to  earn points for their house through a variety of competitive and inclusive events.  In lessons students are encouraged to participate in activities that promote team work and inclusion-for-all form an integral part of the P.E. core curriculum.  Every student is valued for their strengths and weaknesses and given the opportunities to take part in a wide variety of sports and our links with local clubs encourage students to make sport enjoyable and a lifelong commitment.

Students can take additional roles such as Young Leaders and team captains to further develop their understanding of being a leader and working cooperatively with others.

Key Stage 3

Throughout Years 7 - 9 at Broadwater School, students will experience a wide variety of sports during curriculum time including netball, football, rugby, table tennis, badminton, basketball, dance, gymmnastics, trampolining, short tennis, tennis, orienteering, hockey, rounders, cricket, benchball, dodgeball, Athletics and softball.

Students also have the opportunity to attend lunchtime and after school clubs in several of the above sports which may then lead onto them representing the school in Inter school matches and tournaments. Broadwater competes in several competitions throughout the year including football, rugby, netball, swimming, basketball, athletics, rounders and cricket tournaments for both boys and girls.

During the year students also have the opportunity to take part in many Inter house competitions in some of the above named sports. We have a trophy for the House with the most points overall at the end of the year.

We hold an annual sports day every July in which all students take part.

We also hold an annual Inter house swimming competition and enter the Waverley Inter schools swimming competition.

The school has strong links with several sports clubs in the local community including Godalming Lawn Bowls Association, Waverley Vipers Netball Club, Farncombe Cricket Club, Godalming Tennis Club, FYFC, Milford Pumas Girls' Football Club, Guildford Rugby Club, Farncombe Netball Club and Guildford Athletics Club. These links help to extend our more able students and we regularly have external coaches come into school to deliver sessions at lunch time or in lessons.

During KS3 studentshave the opportunity to take part in leadership work. Broadwater hosts several sports events for local primary schools which we organise and run throughout the year. Broadwater Young leaders help to coach, score, umpire and deliver these competitions and festivals giving them an insight into what coaching sport and dealing with young children is really like.

Students learn valuable communication, interpersonal and organisational skills as well as time keeping, coaching, scoring and umpiring skills, which in turn lead to a more rounded individual.

Key Stage 4

Throughout Years 10 -11, including GCSE PE, students will experience a wide variety of sports during curriculum. These sports include: netball, football, rugby, table tennis, badminton, basketball, dance, gymmnastics, trampolining, short tennis, tennis, orienteering, hockey, rounders, cricket, benchball, dodgeball, athletics,  softball, HRF, stoolball, cricket, vollyball, cross country, boccia, swimming and climbing.

In addition to the AQA GCSE in PE students have the option to choose a Sports Science GCSE in Health and Fitness which is geared towards students who enjoy sport and would like to study the subject further and gain a level 2 qualification without the practical assessment of the GCSE course.  Student's study training methods, principles of training, diet, body systems, the benefits of exercise and many other issues concerning health and fitness.

Students also have the opportunity to attend lunchtime and after school clubs in a variety of these sports throughout the year. This can then lead to students being chosen to represent the school in friendly matches, league matches and tournaments against other schools as well as at the annual district sports athletics competition.

KS4 students regularly have the opportunity to take part in Inter house competitions for a variety of sports throughout the year. This also includes our annual sports day when all students take part in at least one event from either track or field as well as the  inter house swimming gala which includes a water polo tournament. The students gain house points which go towards their final points score for the house trophy. This is presented at the end of every school year to the house with the highest points total.
