Overview

Students cover a wide range of activities, starting with a compulsory core and developing into an options programme in Year Eleven. Our main aims are to promote a healthy lifestyle and a lifelong interest in sport and leisure. Our Upper School programme includes GCSE PE which is a popular option. The Department has strong links with the community especially in Hockey, Cricket, Netball and Football. We also provide a vast range of extra curricular activities, both on and off site. There are a variety of trips every year, including Skiing, Water Sports, Sports Tours and trips to international matches. We are active members of our local Sports Council and founder members of our local Junior Sports Council.

Leadership

We have 2 Young Ambassadors for Sport from Year 10; these change every year. Students have to apply to become a young ambassador and have an interview. The Young Ambassadors attend a leadership conference run by Active Surrey and promote sport within school. They sometimes lead assemblies, take part in general leadership work, up date notice boards and sit on the Sports council.

Sports Council

We have a Sports Council which is made up of 18 pupils, 1 representative from each form. They act as a link between the P.E department and students. The Sports Council meets twice a term and discusses what is good and what could be better in P.E. The suggestions made by students are actioned whenever possible and enrich the P.E experience at Broadwater.

Diary Dates

School Sports Day: 14th June 2019

District Sports:  20th June 2019

Assessment

The PE assessment for all year groups will be grades 9-1.

As the top grade 9 is awarded as a percentage of the top grade 7 and 8 students nationally we will not issue grade 9 to students but students achieving grade 7 or 8 may achieve a 9.

Students in year 7 are unlikely to achieve above a grade 3 due to physical limitations of their age and skill levels but exceptions will obviously every student has the potential to achieve as high as they can and will be awarded a grade based on the average of their top 3 sports marks just as they are in the PE GCSE.

Assessment Grades 1-9

School Games Silver Award

SG L1 3 mark 2017 silver (002)We are delighted to announce that we have achieved the SILVER School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year. The School Games Mark is a Government led award scheme launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and into the community, and we are delighted to have been recognised for our success.

Key Stage 3

Throughout Years 7 - 9 at Broadwater School, students will experience a wide variety of sports during curriculum time including netball, football, rugby, table tennis, badminton, basketball, dance, gymmnastics, trampolining, short tennis, tennis, orienteering, hockey, rounders, cricket, benchball, dodgeball, Athletics and softball.

Students also have the opportunity to attend lunchtime and after school clubs in several of the above sports which may then lead onto them representing the school in Inter school matches and tournaments. Broadwater competes in several competitions throughout the year including football, rugby, netball, swimming, basketball, athletics, rounders and cricket tournaments for both boys and girls.

During the year students also have the opportunity to take part in many Inter house competitions in some of the above named sports. We have a trophy for the House with the most points overall at the end of the year.

We hold an annual sports day every July in which all students take part.

We also hold an annual Inter house swimming competition and enter the Waverley Inter schools swimming competition.

The school has strong links with several sports clubs in the local community including Godalming Lawn Bowls Association, Waverley Vipers Netball Club, Farncombe Cricket Club, Godalming Tennis Club, FYFC, Milford Pumas Girls' Football Club, Guildford Rugby Club, Farncombe Netball Club and Guildford Athletics Club. These links help to extend our more able students and we regularly have external coaches come into school to deliver sessions at lunch time or in lessons.

During KS3 studentshave the opportunity to take part in leadership work. Broadwater hosts several sports events for local primary schools which we organise and run throughout the year. Broadwater Young leaders help to coach, score, umpire and deliver these competitions and festivals giving them an insight into what coaching sport and dealing with young children is really like.

Students learn valuable communication, interpersonal and organisational skills as well as time keeping, coaching, scoring and umpiring skills, which in turn lead to a more rounded individual.

Key Stage 4

Throughout Years 10 -11, including GCSE PE, students will experience a wide variety of sports during curriculum. These sports include: netball, football, rugby, table tennis, badminton, basketball, dance, gymmnastics, trampolining, short tennis, tennis, orienteering, hockey, rounders, cricket, benchball, dodgeball, athletics,  softball, HRF, stoolball, cricket, vollyball, cross country, boccia, swimming and climbing.

In addition to the AQA GCSE in PE students have the option to choose a V-Cert in Health and Fitness which is geared towards students who enjoy sport and would like to study the subject further and gain a level 2 qualification without the practical assessment of the GCSE course.  Student's study training methods, principles of training, diet, body systems, the benefits of exercise and many other issues concerning health and fitness.

Students also have the opportunity to attend lunchtime and after school clubs in a variety of these sports throughout the year. This can then lead to students being chosen to represent the school in friendly matches, league matches and tournaments against other schools as well as at the annual district sports athletics competition.

KS4 students regularly have the opportunity to take part in Inter house competitions for a variety of sports throughout the year. This also includes our annual sports day where all students take part in at least one event from either track or field as well as the  inter house swimming gala which includes a waterpolo tournament. The students gain house points which go towards their final points score for the house trophy. This is presented at the end of every school year to the house with the highest points total.

British Values

In PE lessons at Broadwater School we promote ‘fair play in competition’ throughout all lessons and through participation in national, regional,  local and inter-house sports competitions. Students are taught to follow rules and the expectations of the school while celebrating and rewarding success.   We have a competitive house cup competition that encourages all students to  earn points for their house through a variety of competitive and inclusive events.  In lessons students are encouraged to participate in activities that promote team work and inclusion-for-all form an integral part of the P.E. core curriculum.  Every student is valued for their strengths and weaknesses and given the opportunities to take part in a wide variety of sports and our links with local clubs encourage students to make sport enjoyable and a lifelong commitment.

Students can take additional roles such as Young Leaders and team captains to further develop their understanding of being a leader and working cooperatively with others.
